golf mk5 esp and power steering light on

The VW dealer wants £1200 to repair. I got in my '09 GTI today to go somewhere...and noticed that I had both the power steering light (yellow) and the ESP light on...the ESP light was not flashing either, just on. Hi Folks, i have had my Mk V GTi since its birth in 2005, just had my 6th service, as well as front wheel bearing replaced, but VW came back same day and said the amber steering wheel warning light came on on the display in the dash, so they did all the diagnostic checks, which apparently came back with 'sporadic' steering fault codes.

Hi Fif, thanks for your reply, The steering wheel light wasn’t on until I unhooked the battery then hooked the terminal back on the light appeared.

I checked the battery voltage and it is 12.55V. Both lights stayed on until the car warmed up then they both went off? also that day i sold my mk5 steering wheel and bought a MOMO Wheel/Hub obviously i know the airbag light will be on after but i would have eventually short wired that which i did not yet because now... i have no steering as its like taking out a PS pump on a mk4 or so and is SUPER hard to turn and my ESP LIGHT wont turn off The steering wheel light is yellow (not red) which doesn't indicate a complete failure. The Electronic Power Control system is controlled by the engine control unit, brake control unit, transmission control unit and the steering control unit.. (temp about 50 degrees). Esp light comes on after 10 mind of driving normally quickly followed by steering light on vw golf mk 5. This happened 3 days in a row when starting the car in the morning.
